Ankle not fractured!

Yeah! I just got the result of my bone scan from last week. I had sprained my ankle 5 or so weeks ago and it didn't feel like the kind of sprain I had had before so thought I'd get a scan just to rule out a small fracture. There isn't any!!! Yeah. There had been some burning pain which has subsided since I got my low back adjusted. I had thought my back was tight from walking funny to compensate for my sore ankle. At least I can start hiking now and probably running in a couple of weeks. Now I'll be ready for backpacking season once the snow melts!

Kayak Surfing

Last weekend, George and I went out to Long Beach. We were lucky enough to get the last camping spot right on the beach. What a spectacular view to wake up to! The weather was great - not summertime warm, but nice and sunny. The surf was good - so I was told since I have no clue about that. George brought his white-water kayaks and taught me how to surf on the waves in the kayak. On my profile for internet dating - which is how we met, for those of you that didn't know that - I had a mini-challenge to find an outdoor sport that I hadn't tried, and George found one!!! I had done some white-water lessons a few years ago, but wasn't very good yet. I have a good feel of the water, probably from the summers of canoeing with my brothers in really wavy water. It was fun catching the waves and trying to keep the kayak straight. I need to work on my roll to feel more confident out there. George helped me back up when I flipped over. He is a kayak instructor and so he gives great pointers that are easy to understand. It seems to be possible to get instructions from one you are dating!!! He, of course, was showing off in the bigger waves. It's easier to pick up than regular surfing because you catch more waves and don't get as cold. I still want to try regular surfing just to try it. I did get some pics of me surfing, but don't have a digital camera yet so will post it later. Must get one soon and get with the times. Am now a surfing babe though.

An Inconvenient Truth

Last Friday on it's opening night, I saw a new movie called An Inconvenient Truth. George wanted to go on opening night to support it's cause. It's basically a documentary with Al Gore, the former US VP, talking about the science behind global warming. We have all heard about it before and I have known that the earth has gradually been warming up so it's been hard to know what to believe etc. If we assume that he has given us correct information, it's a clear, easy-to-understand look at the sudden increase in the warming and why it is a problem. For me, I came away with a bigger why to conserve energy. In understanding what is happening, my motivation to conserve energy and respect our planet is much greater. It is entertaining as far as a scietific documentary goes and anyone can follow it. You can then go to www.climatecrisis.com to find out what you can do as well. I recommend it to everyone.

Seymour Demonstration Forest

The other day I found myself with an hour to spare before work. I have heard of this 10km (one way) paved road in the middle of the Seymour Demonstration Forest that is supposed to be a great place to bike ride and rollerblade. You have to go over some gravel road to get there so have never gone on my road bike there. It's a great place to ride through all the old, big trees. There are kilometer markers and cute, little picnic spots along the way. Great place to ride with kids with no traffic and be in the woods at the same time. There is a dam and fish hatchery at the end, but I didn't get there as I had to get to work. Worth checking out another time. Just a little gem discovered in my own backyard.

Hot Firemen

Yes, I have finally met the firemen across the street from me today. It's only taken a year and a half, but I finally did it! This is another typical "Kath" story so for any of you who were wondering, I haven't changed that much. I had left my keys in Nanaimo yesterday after being there for the weekend. George found them and sent them off, but they didn't get to my work by the time I left today. Will get them tomorrow. A friend of a co-worker of mine used to live in this same building and had lost her keys so got the firemen to raise up their ladder and go in her open patio door. I remembered this and thought it a fantastic plan!!!! I had my bedroom window open just a little and being on the 4th floor, not really worried about breakins too much. So the guys did the same thing for me. Not sure if me being in my lycra from yoga helped, but whatever was going to work. They got a lot of the young guys to do the job, which was fine with me as they were quite hot!! They were trying to bug me and asked if I wanted to climb up the ladder which would have been fun, but they wouldn't let me. I was so excited to get into my place!! Then, not sure if it was a coincidence, I was on my balcony for only a couple of minutes watering plants and putting my window back together when the fire truck came out but didn't realize that the garage door wasn't fully opened and crashed into it. I hope I didn't cause it. It was quite hilarious. Anyways, it's another good story and a good laugh.
